Wrexham to Sign Clough?

Sunday

The Sunday Mirror is reporting that Wrexham FC are pursuing Bolton's promising Manchester born striker Zach Clough.

It is believed that manager Andy Morrell will be putting a bid on the table should the club get promoted via the conference play-offs.

Clough has been scoring regularly for Wanderer's youth sides and is seen by Morrell as an ideal signing to liven up Wrexham's aging front line.

Ben’s new-look car has the Californian touch

Ben’s new-look car has the Californian touch

Mid Wales driver Ben Power showed off a spectacular new colour scheme, produced by a top US designer, on the opening day of the 2013 UK National Legends Car Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire.
Mid Wales driver Ben Power showed off a spectacular new colour scheme, produced by a top US designer, on the opening day of the 2013 UK National Legends Car Championship at Oulton Park in Cheshire.
Power, from Guilsfield, near Welshpool, called on American graphic artist Jamie Pfeifer to come up with a design using the distinctive red and black of sponsor Guttercrest, and in-keeping with the retro look of the car.
And on its debut, the new-look car performed well, taking third place in heat one and in the final, but getting shunted out of contention in the second race while trying to avoid an incident.
The results were especially impressive, as Power had to curtail his practice on Friday when the differential blew.
Pfeifer is himself an accomplished racing driver – based in California for many years, he now lives in Missouri and still races in historic events.
“We wanted to use red, black and white, but were struggling for a way to make it work,” said Power, who ended fourth in the final championship table last season – his best-ever finish in the hotly-contested series.
“Jamie was recommended to us, and did a great job. He’s a professional graphic artist, but with decades of racing experience, he also understands the lines and shape of a car – and that was vital in getting this just right.
“It’s a really striking design that attracted a lot of attention on its debut. Unfortunately, the racing was so frantic, we suffered a bit of damage, but that’s just the way it goes when the racing is so close.”
Pfeifer, who represented the USA in several international stock car events, said: “I was really pleased to get involved with this project. I was able to come up with some initial ideas and then we developed the favourite to the version that will be seen on the car at the races.
“It’s great to know that Ben has started the season well. I look forward to catching some of the action online and hopefully on TV.”
Last season was the best ever for the Welshpool and Oswestry-based Guttercrest team. Power, now aged 23, recorded his first race wins in Legends Cars, and for a while he was second in the championship behind long-time leader and now champion Lawrence Davey, from East Sussex.
The UK Legends series visits tracks around the UK, including famous circuits such as Brands Hatch and Donington Park. It features top drivers from around the UK and the continent, including several ex-world champions.
Legends racing originated on the US oval tracks, and the cars have an American look, being 5/8-scale replicas of classic US models. Guttercrest Racing runs a Ford Coupe 1937 replica, with a 1250cc Yamaha motorcycle engine.
With identical cars and the fastest drivers having to start at the back of the grid, there is said to be more overtaking in a single Legends race than in a whole season of Formula 1.
Guttercrest Racing is backed by the family-owned aluminium guttering company Guttercrest, based in Oswestry. The team has further support from Cardiff-based PR consultancy Weltch Media, and Ripla Designs.

OXFORD 20 SOUTH WALES SCORPIONS 22

Oxford Rugby League’s first ever home match turned out to be a classic, despite rain for the entire game making the ball slippery, as the Scorpions scraped to a 22-20 win in front of 352 boisterous fans.

The match was even throughout and the scoring was try for try for the entire 80 minutes, and in the end it was the kicking of Courtney Davies that won the game for the Scorpions.

Oxford deserved a draw and could have got one. They scored their fourth try in the final minute and had experienced Jonny Leather kicked a successful conversion rather than slicing the ball wide, Oxford would have picked up two points rather than their solitary bonus point.

From a penalty, Scorpions looked for the first try of the game early on, but James Greenwood spilled the already slippery ball and the chance was lost.

At the other end, Alex Thompson almost gave Oxford the lead as he dived over the line from short range but he too mishandled.

Scorpions were first to score when on 12 minutes, Steve Parry kicked a grubber under the sticks and Greenwood pounced. Courtney Davies converted.

Oxford levelled on 21 minutes when Valu Bentley was on the end of a high hopeful bomb that slipped past the Scorpions back-line. Jonny Leather converted.

Scorpions led again on  the half hour with a Shae Lyon-Fraser try which Davies converted.

But Oxford hit back near to half-time when Sean Morris stormed through into the corner. Leather missed on this occasion.

Matt Fiander was close to a third try for Oxford but was stopped on the line meaning that the Scorpions had a slender two-point lead at the interval.

Oxford started the second half on fire. The won a quick goal-line drop out and from the resulting set Shaun Robinson almost scored in the corner but was pushed into touch.

Scorpions extended their advantage on 57 minutes when Rhodri Lloyd picked up a loose ball and had a relatively easy sprint to score. Davies missed the kick.

Again Oxford hit back after Leather picked up a stray ball on his own 10 metre line and sprinted virtually the length of the field, converting his own try to level the scores again.

But Scorpions regained the lead again with six minutes remaining when Chris Leyshon scored out on the wing and Davies kicked the tricky conversion.

And the drama continued right into the final minute. Shaun Robinson scored in the corner which meant Leather was under pressure to earn his side a draw, but couldn’t cope with the challenge.

Wrexham's Nia is New Star of Welsh Netball

Wednesday

Welsh Netball's mid court defender Nia Jones has won UWIC's Rising Star Award for January 2013, and she will find out if she has won the overall 2013 Rising Star Award (Bob Humphrey's Memorial Award) at a dinner on the 28th June.

Nia caught the eyes of the judging panel as she represents Wales in both Netball and Football, and is a Celtic Dragon Netballer (Wales's elite Netball side, competing in the Netball Superleague shown on Sky Sports.) Nia juggles all this with being a student at UWIC where she is studying Sport & PE.
Wrexham born, Nia has captained the Welsh Netball team at u17 and u21 level to European Silver medals, and she turns 21 on Friday 6th April this week, so this will be her final year in the u21 squad.

The u21s are currently in an intensive 10 day residential training camp, and will be the host team at the u21 European Netball Championships later this month, before heading to the u21 pinnacle quadrennial Netball event - the World Youth Netball Championships, being held at the brand new Emirates Staduim in Glasgow in August.

Along with her Football travels, Nia was selected to join the Welsh Senior Netball squad as a non-playing squad member, on a recent trip to the Cook Islands. Wales won the tri-series in the South Pacific, taking three wins from three.
